The I-SENSE is one of the Research Groups of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS). The I-SENSE Group is very active in a number of Scientific and Research Areas with main Application Areas the Intelligent Transportation Systems, Virtual Environments, Assistive Technologies as well as Smart Integrated Systems & Communication.

 

Research activities

Data fusion plays a key role in current and future vehicular active safety systems. Combining information from different sensors broadens the area around the vehicle covered by sensors and increases the reliability of the whole system in case of sensor failure.

I-SENSE group develops data fusion algorithms especially related to object recognition, trackingand advanced situation awareness using data from many heterogeneous sensors such as radars, lidars and cameras. Development of data fusion platforms for testing and visualization purposes is a major research area of the group. Main application areas are the automotive field, navigation and transportation.

Human Machine Interaction (HMI) is one of the key factors towards ensuring social acceptability of machine-based products and services, as users experience new technologies through contact with their user interfaces. In this respect, HMI plays a critical role in the development of Information Society Technologies and is continuously facing new challenges, especially nowadays with the significant introduction of nomadic devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets) in the market. 
I-SENSE is specialized in the design and development of Human Machine Interfaces for automotive applications.


Relevant projects are EUCLIDE, AIDE, HAVEit andAutoNet2030. 

I-SENSE, being in direct connection with the Laboratory of Fiber Optics (MFOL) of NTUA, has developed a series of microwave and radar systems including Ground Penetrating Radar Systems using various radiometric methodologies (eg CW/FM-CW, UWB and other). The applications of these radars range in underground water detection, water leakages identification, underground 3D imaging as well as underground materials detection. The testing of the prototypes is performed using the lab equipment that includes an Anechoic Chamber DC-20GHz, a Faraday chamber, Network and Spectrum Analyzers up to 50GHz, Signal Generators and a Communication Analyzer. Finally, our team has an extensive experience in developing sensors’ interfacing software using Labview, HP VEE,VISUAL C++ and MATLAB.

I-SENSE group is involved in the research field of embedded systems. Focusing on remote monitoring and remote sensing techniques which allow embedded systems like unattended sensors to work together as teams with potential applications in urban security and environmental monitoring.

Our group is working on user-centric VR/MR environments with emphasis on enhancing interaction, immersion and telepresence in various fields either industrial (aerospace, automotive, maritime) or other (gaming, rehabilitation).

Relevant projects are ManuVAR, HILAS, INTUITION, Virthualis, Use it Wisely, GAME-ABLING, Tempus-e-Laboratories for Physics and Engineering Education, VR-Hyperspace.

I-Sense group conducts research on architectures, protocols and systems for wireless networks, dealing with design, implementation and evaluation aspects. The research is focused on wireless networking scenarios including mesh, ad hoc, cellular, and wireless sensor networks and covers personal, local and wide area network types. The main interest is to design suitable and efficient wireless networks that can address the requirements of diverse communication systems, ICT technologies, industrial, public and professional systems.

I-SENSE group has active research areas centered around the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), a software architecture design pattern which supports the development of distributed software systems in terms of loosely coupled networked services. The research is focused on new networking concepts for better information flow, network resources management and sharing in a service oriented architecture.

Electromobility refers to the use of electricity to reduce the dependence of transport on oil and other fossil fuels and to enable the electric propulsion of vehicles. The target is to reduce GHG emissions and especially CO2 emissions, making transport greener. I-SENSE group is focusing on load balancing and control algorithms, connection of the vehicle to the grid (V2G interface), range estimation algorithms and on-road charging techniques.Relevant projects are PowerUp, Mobility2.0 and FABRIC.

Cooperative ITS (C-ITS)is the next generation of ITS, where vehicles communicate with other vehicles (V2V) and with the infrastructure (V2I). Different wireless technologies are considered for achieving real-time two-way communication, such as ITS G5 and 4G/LTE. It is expected that with the introduction of C-ITS in the market existing services will be improved and new ones will be created,leading to increased safety, greater efficiency and sustainability in transport. I-SENSE activities focus on the seamless integration of the different communication technologies in terms of data handling and the smart dissemination of information in cooperative networks. Relevant projects are SAFESPOT, TEAM, MOBiNET, Mobility2.0 and MyWay.

Automation in road transport is a key research area that will improve road safety and address inefficiency in traffic flow whilst mitigating the environmental impact of road traffic. Performance is enhanced because drivers are supported in demanding or repetitive tasks. I-SENSE is specialized in the design and development of robust perception algorithms and embedded perception platforms tailored to the needs of automated driving. In addition the convergence of automated vehicles with cooperative systems is one of the key research areas under investigation.

The I-SENSE group has an extensive experience in computer vision tools and methodologies using high resolution optical, thermal, hyperspectral and multispectral cameras/sensors. Hyperspectral/multispectral imaging collects and analyzes information across the whole electromagnetic spectrum in contrast to the human vision system that includes only three bands (red, green, blue) of the spectrum. Further to this, Hyper-spectral imaging can act as a “material sensor” that via analysis and processing, can automatically identity and extract different material properties.  The applications of these technologies and methodologies range in micro-meso-macro crowd detection and recognition as well as crowd behavior identification to detect abnormalities. Other applications include the usage of 3D stereo cameras for detection of anomalies in tunnel intrados such as (cracks, material deterioration or other structural defects) via 3D reconstruction methodologies.
